DAISY WHEEL PRINTER

             Daisy wheel printer

A printing device used in some electric typewriters and printers, consisting of raised characters fixed at the ends of spokes on a wheel is called daisy wheel printer. In other words, it is an obsolete type of  serial impact printer formerly widely used on word-processor systems for producing letters and documents.

The daisy wheel printer was introduced by Diablo Systems Inc. in 1972 and represented a considerable improvement in speed and reduction in mechanical complexity compared to other typewriters then used as low-speed printers. Its uses are: -

1)               It is used in order to get the quality of type found on typewriters.

2)               Daisy wheel printing was used in electronic typewriters, word processors and computers from 1972.

3)               It is cheap to buy and maintain.

Some interesting points of daisy wheel printer are: -

1)               A daisy wheel is a printing element that, when seen from the side, looks faintly like the flower of a daisy.

2)               The daisy-wheel printer appeared in 1972, replacing much slower typewriters that had been used with computers.

3)                While daisy-wheel printers were relatively slow, they produced print equal in quality to the print of the best typewriters.
